Kathryn A. Tuma, Much So Strangely Soft and Self-Illuminating: The Drawings of John King, Vicenza Arte exhibition essay, 2005
John M. King at Fuller/Elwood (Seattle)
John King's encaustics on wood are deceptively simple. Inner states are isolated, distilled, reduced to single image iconography suspended in a shallow visual space. The color range is so close it seems to disappear; subtle shifts from warm to cool give off an ethereal shimmer. King is a gem grader in New York; he has given these mental objects the same fixed consideration. Yearning, End of Waiting, Strange Behavior, History's Caress -- these meditative images emit the aura of a visual koan.
